Precedent A

Le Corbusier_City of Chandigarh

Chandigarh is probably the closest example of the modernist utopia in recent history. It encapsulates a series of Corbusian ideals, manifesting in a logical urban design with resilient infrastructure that are still functional today. [1]

Wide, clean roads, plazas and modernist statues combine to create a distinctively unique architectural experience in the city, which many pay faithful pilgrimage to each year. There’s an intrinsic focus in creating self-sufficient zones connected by abundant green spaces, an established model that can be seen in many cities even decades later (Fig.1).

Precedent B

Rem Koolhaas_Villa Lemoine

Villa Lemoine, otherwise known as Maison Bordeaux, is hailed by many as the champion of Koolhaas’ philosophy: a diagrammatic building at heart, a new interpretation of modernism where the machine defines user pattern and experience.

There’s a spatial dynamism exhibited in the space unseen before, thanks to the ingenious placement of structure and bold choice of material. Transparency and opaqueness is entwined, giving users completely new experiences as they physically ascend through the space (Fig.3).
